To find the trailhead, right after you pass the pond start looking to your left and you’ll see the trailhead marked by a sign. A short trail leads to Grassy Creek’s miniature Hoover Dam but if you’re up for a longer hiek then you can take a trail to Carter Falls. There are multiple trails on the property which we always love. Once you arrive at the tasting room you can park in front (if available) or there is plenty of parking around back if you head to the left of the building as you’re coming in.ĭuring COVID they’ve had tables set up outside on most weekends and heaters during cooler weather so sometimes the front parking lot isn’t available. This was the dairy barn in its previous life and is now where the wine is made. When you first turn on the road that leads to the winery, you’ll see a large white barn to your right. Recently, they started doing their tastings as flights where you get a choice of 5 different wines that they bring out to your table. Their Three C’s blend, Cabernet Franc, and Chambourcin are my favorite. There is a good-size gravel parking lot in front of the tasting room. The tasting room is set off of Highway 268 up on a hill above their grape vines. In the winter you can see a beautiful sunset here. It’s also a beautiful place to have a glass outside and walk around. I love this place because the tasting room is so cozy – wood floors and wood paneling on the inside – and the owners and employees are so friendly. This was North Carolina’s first certified organic winery which is a feat in itself. This is a cute spot but it does get crowded during weekend afternoons since it’s so close to downtown. You’ll also find Ashe County Cheese, crackers, and gift items sold in the tasting room. We love sitting on their front porch and watching the cars go by. Otherwise, you can order a glass or bottle and take it to one of their other rooms to find a table or sit outside. If you want to do a tasting you get to choose 5 or 6 wines from their list and they’ll serve them each to you at the bar. Walk around the building to the front door and you’ll enter right into the room with their bar. You’ll see their large sign out front and there is a gravel driveway to the left of the building that leads to a large parking lot out back. It’s a colorful yellow building with blue accents. You are always met with a friendly greeting when you walk in the door. The building is right along North Bridge Street near downtown Elkin. Don’t worry though, they still have a good selection of dry wines to choose from. Slightly Askew is the only winery on the list that specializes in sweet wines.
